Bristol 2018

23 February 2018 at DeskLodge
Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol

Not just the first do_action day in Bristol, not just the first do_action day in the United Kingdom, but the very first do_action day in the whole of Europe!!!

Why would you not want to be part of it?!

do_action Bristol is a one day hackathon with the aim of building 5 websites for 5 worthy causes in a single day.

This is a WordPress Community event so all the sites will be built using WordPress. The event will be held on Friday 23 February 2018 at:

DeskLodge,
1 Temple Way,
Bristol,
BS2 0BY.

This is a great opportunity for

  • developers,
  • designers,
  • graphic artists,
  • content editors,
  • SEO and social media specialists, and
  • project managers

from in and around Bristol who have expertise in WordPress, or even just an interest in WordPress, to come together and spend the day

  • working in teams, learning from each another, and sharing knowledge and skills with one another,
  • helping extremely worthy local causes benefit by getting an expertly crafted website,
  • oh, and we’ll have fun and make new friends while we’re about it!

And if you’re a charity or non-profit organisation you don’t need to allocate some of your already hard-stretched funds for what would probably be a low-budget website. By participating in this event you have the chance to get a well designed and expertly developed new website, created by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of volunteers, for absolutely nothing – freeing up your limited funds to be spent on your primary cause – and in a single day, so no long drawn out projects that sap your time and energy and will be finished “sometime soon”!

Get in at the beginning with this new type of WordPress Community event, which complements the more well-known and established community events, namely MeetUp Groups and WordCamps.

We look forward to your participation!

Role descriptions

Project Manager –  you’re the glue between the team and the nonprofit organization. You’ll contact the non-profit organization before the day in order to get specific requirements from them and do some pre-planning for the event. You’ll also lead the planning with your team prior to the event and will keep everyone on-task during the event. High-level project goals are your priority.

Web Designer – your job is to devise a design direction for the project that fits the needs and goals of your organization. You’ll then fully develop this direction into a website design. The exact tools and procedures you use to this end are up to you and your team to agree upon.

Web Developer – you will be bringing the website to live by coding the design created by your team’s Web Developer. Whether you base your work on a theme or start off from scratch is up to you and your team to decide and agree upon.

QA Tester – your job will be to make sure that the final product performs well across a number of representative devices and browsers. The tools you use for this purpose are up to you to decide on.

Content Manager – your task will be to work with the content provided by the nonprofit organization. You may have to write some content from scratch as well as adjust existing content. This may include writing CTAs, working on a consistent tone for the entire website, and devising a content strategy and information architecture for the website that your team will be building. You will then populate the new website with the final content.

WordCamp Belfast 2016

2 October 2016 at Peter Froggatt Centre

The WCBelfast do_action event has been postponed, and will no longer be part of WordCamp Belfast.
Instead we aim to organise a separate, dedicated do_action event in the not too distant future.

This will be the first ever WordCamp to take place within Northern Ireland. With the main talks taking place on Saturday 1st October 2016. Along side other events planned for Sunday 2nd October, we decided to bring the do_action spirit to Belfast.

Our goal in our first year is to start small with around 3 projects, but while doing so – deliver a rewarding experience for all involved.  We are currently in the process of finalising the non-profits we will be working with – so if you are a non-profit, or know one that is in need of an updated web presence – please do get in touch!

If you are interested in helping out with the event as a designer, project manager, developer or in any capacity, please drop us a line via the WordCamp Belfast site: https://2016.belfast.wordcamp.org/contact/
